Meanwhile in Finland: Author Introduces Readers to ‘Pantsdrunk’ Relaxation Technique (And We Can’t Wait to Try It)

In these trying times, everyone’s looking for a way to chill out, relax, and kick back as much as possible. We could all use a little break from reality. But not all stress-reduction techniques are created equal. One, in fact, definitely sounds superior to yoga, meditation, or any of those new-age tactics. It’s a Finnish practice called “kalsarikanni,” or as its creator dubbed it in English, “päntsdrunk.”

Finland-based journalist and author Miska Rantanen is behind the behavioral trend, and he tells you how to achieve this inebriated state of bliss in his new book, Päntsdrunk (Kalsarikanni): The Finnish Path to Relaxation.

So, what is päntsdrunk? He defines it as “drinking at home, alone, in your underwear.” It’s so common in his homeland that there’s actually an emoji depicting it in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ guide to Finland.

While we’ve been trying to drown our sorrows for the past 18 months as the coronavirus pandemic rages, we have to admit we’ve been doing it fully clothed. What fools we’ve been! We’ll be shedding our pants and cracking open a cold one ASAP. Satisfaction, here we come.
