Meanwhile in Oregon: There Was a Festival in Honor of Your Favorite, Crispy Childhood Snack

In the nostalgic snack hierarchy, it’s hard to beat the likes of Bagel Bites, Hot Pockets, and tater tots. As we age, the first two are still acceptable in smaller quantities, but the timeless tater tot never gets old. They’re crispy, bite-sized, warm, savory, salty, and delicious. Fresh out of the oven or fryer, they’re perfect on their own, with a dollop of ketchup, or slathered in cheese, bacon, and various other nacho-like fixings. Overall, there’s no wrong time to indulge in a bowl or tots. That’s why we were so stoked when we heard there was actually a tater tot-centric festival.

The two-day festival took place from September 17-18 in the town of Ontario, Oregon. You might be wondering why exactly a tot festival took place in Oregon. This Idaho-bordering city is the birthplace of the beloved tater tot (and the original home of Ore-Ida) and crispy spud fans flocked there to celebrate the nostalgic treat.

Events included a tater tot cooking competition, a carnival-style boardwalk, and (of course) a tater tot eating contest. For only $5 potato patrons received a sampler platter of the five finalists from the aforementioned cooking contest.

Obviously, we all missed this year’s event. But there’s still time to book a flight and accommodations for next year’s festival. We wouldn’t want to miss a festival celebrating our favorite childhood (and adult) food.
