Cameron Diaz Recreates Classic ‘There’s Something About Mary’ Scene Proving She’s Still Full of Spunk

Talk about spunk. The year was 1998, a mixed bag of American culture that saw the travesty of N’Sync’s first song and Seinfeld’s last episode. Despite these setbacks, including Bill Clinton recollecting not getting a blowjob in front of the entire country, Cameron Diaz perked us up with There’s Something About Mary.

The brash rom-com from the Farrelly Brothers was a bonafide home run about a singular woman whose undeniable magnetism innocently lured men into her orbit. And nobody suited the role better than Diaz whose approachable beauty was game for all manner of tomfoolery. Boasting a gruesome zipper incident and a daring dog fight, the movie had plenty of memorable moments. But none left a stain on America’s consciousness quite like the “hair gel” scene.

If you haven’t seen it, we won’t spoil it for you (entirely). Suffice it to say Chris Elliot (of Schitt’s Creek fame) gives pal Ben Stiller this unforgettable advice before his date with Mary: “Tell me you spank the monkey before any big date. Oh my God, he doesn’t flog the dolphin before a big date. Are you crazy? That’s like going out there with a loaded gun!” Then after an intensely awkward (self) love scene, Mary naively sports the iconic do that, um, got stuck in our heads like…you know.

It was poetry writ large for the artless pubescent in us all.

Twenty-five years later, Diaz recreated the moment on her IG. Is it hinting at her return to Hollywood or just a fun plug for her organic wine brand Avaline? If Diaz unretires from acting after nearly a decade, we’d be the first onboard. But don’t call it a nostalgia trip, she’s just as spunky as ever.
