Stanley Tucci Has Strong Opinions on Pizza Toppings (Here’s the 1 He Can’t Stand)

Stanley Tucci has strong opinions on pizza toppings – and no wonder. As the host of Searching For Italy, the Academy Award-winning actor has traveled across the eponymous country’s 20 regions, sampling the culinary delights, and learning the history of, Italian cities and towns.

The premiere episode of his CNN travel series took place in Naples, where he nibbled on Neapolitan pizza and fried pizza. But if you’re the kind of person who thinks pizza is like sex – when it’s good, it’s good, and when it’s bad, it’s still good – Tucci has a bone to pick with you.

When asked by TODAY Food for his thoughts on pineapple as a pizza topping, Tucci didn’t hold back. “I have no thoughts on it,” he said. “It’s so repellent, were I to think of it, I might not survive. It’s just gross.”

He said he tried it as a kid but “blocked it out.” Now, as an adult, he “can’t fathom” putting the tropical fruit topping on his precious ‘za.

His hatred for pineapple on pizza even prompted him to wonder, “Where does it come from? Like who’s the guy who said, ‘This is a good idea?'”

(For the pizza nerds out there, the pineapple topping idea was attributed to a Greek-born Canadian immigrant and restauranteur Sam Panopoulos. He started the trend back in the 1960s.)

We’re not huge fans of the sweet-savory combo of pineapple and pizza, but we wouldn’t turn a slice down, either, if that was only option – at least, not if you’re including some Canadian bacon on that pie.

If you ever get the chance to dine with the Emmy award-winning host (in your dreams, right?), now you know what not to put on his pizza. In fact, maybe leave the pizza-making to Stanley Tucci. When it comes to Italian food, he knows what he’s doing.
