Well, It Happened: Mrs. Doubtfire Has COVID

It’s no stretch of a middle-aged man’s pantyhose to say that Mrs. Doubtfire is up there with Mary Poppins as an all-time great nanny. As a divorced man who disguises himself as his estranged family’s Scottish nanny, Robin Williams excelled to such an extent that you forget that he is Mrs. Doubtfire. Despite being a comedy, Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) deals with divorce and, in turn, its titular nanny in a heartfelt and frank way.

So, let’s be frank: just when you thought your week was going pretty good, and you were looking forward to seeing Broadway’s new musical adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire by four time-Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks and starring Rob McClure as Daniel Hillard, Jenn Gambatese, Peter Bartlet, Charity Angél Dawson, Mark Evans, J. Harrison Ghee, Analise Scarpaci, Jake Ryan Flynn, Avery Sell, and Brad Oscar…

A handful of people in the production contracted COVID-19. According to Variety, Dec. 16 through Dec. 19 performances at New York’s Steven Sondheim Theatre have been canceled and Ticket buyers will be contacted by Telecharge.com for exchanges and refunds. The production is expected to resume performing the following Tuesday for a 7 p.m. show.

Broadway theaters began reopening in August after being closed for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mrs. Doubtfire’s predicament leads a wave of cancellations hitting Broadway recently due to a surge of COVID cases in N.Y.C, including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Ain’t Too Proud, Freestyle Love Supreme, Hamilton, and The West End revival of Cabaret

All our love to you, poppets.
