‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Teaser Hilariously Shows Just How ‘Not Sunny’ Rob McElhenney’s New Soccer Club Is (With Ryan Reynolds)

Who’s a bigger trickster? Rob McElhenney or Ryan Reynolds? A new trailer for the dynamic duo’s Welcome to Wrexham docuseries will have you questioning who’s more devious.

For those unaware, the upcoming FX series follows the actors as they buy and attempt to run one of the oldest Welsh football teams in existence together. But the trailer also blatantly plugs McElhenney’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia series…and Reynolds is a little slow on the uptake.

The clip starts with the Always Sunny theme song, though what viewers see is a pub in Wrexham, Wales, not the City of Brotherly Love. Then the shot moves indoors to show a quintet of pals – who look suspiciously like the It’s Always Sunny cast – staring at a TV screen, confused, while the cast of the long-running comedy stares back. It’s all very meta.

That’s when Reynolds and McElhenney – who are watching this all unfold on TV themselves – come into view.

“Did I approve a tie-in for our show and ‘Always Sunny in Philadelphia?’” Reynolds asks.

“Uh, no, I did,” McElhenney replies.

“Oh, am I in a promo for that show right now?” Reynolds inquires.

“No…” McElhenney lies.

Welcome to Wrexham is said to explore “the dreams and people of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling football club.” It debuts in 2022 on FX.

As for who will come out on top in terms of cleverness in the battle of wits between McElhenney and Reynolds, that remains to be seen.
