Princess Diana’s true feelings about King Charles have reportedly surfaced following the release of a new memoir. “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister” was released on September 22, nearly 30 years after Diana’s death in Paris in 1997. Charles Spencer has said that he wrote the book to tell his sister’s story from his perspective and correct what he considers long-accepted myths.
Former royal bodyguard reveals how Princess Diana truly felt about King Charles
Ken Wharfe, who protected Princess Diana for five years as her royal bodyguard, claims that she “repeatedly” told him that she loved King Charles. He reportedly said he has “no doubt” that the late royal loved the then-Prince of Wales.
In earlier comments to The Mirror, Wharfe said, “Part of Diana’s problem was that she naively believed that the relationship with Camilla would fade away.”
He went on to say, “But let’s be honest, Camilla was there from day one. Camilla from my time, I went there in the mid-1980s, was very much the discussion at the time.”
The former Scotland Yard officer reportedly explained that Diana’s openness led her to share the full details of her relationship with him. Although he questioned her decision at the time, hearing her account gave him a deeper understanding of Diana. He also reportedly added that she genuinely believed the relationship would eventually come to an end.
Concluding, the ex-royal protection guard said, “There is no doubt in my mind that Diana did love Charles. I mean, she said that to me repeatedly.” As for their troubled marriage, Diana addressed it in a tell-all TV interview with journalist Martin Bashir, where she famously said, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
Ken Wharfe’s reported claim comes as Princess Diana and King Charles’ relationship faces renewed attention following a series of allegations made by Diana’s younger brother, Charles Spencer, in a new memoir.
Among Earl Spencer’s claims is that the reigning monarch said “we’ll forget her soon enough” just days after the former Princess of Wales died. He further recalled the King sounding “giddily elated… like a lottery winner” during their call after the 1997 crash.
