King Charles was reportedly at the center of a troubling childhood story that Princess Diana later shared with Charles Spencer. According to Spencer’s new memoir, the future monarch was allegedly considered for ear surgery after being teased about his appearance and becoming self-conscious.
However, Diana’s brother acknowledged that he could not independently verify the story. He wrote that Diana believed it and became “desperately sad for” Charles, adding that she felt “fiercely protective” of her future husband.
Charles Spencer recounts a story Princess Diana told him but says he cannot verify it, claims memoir
According to a RadarOnline report, Charles Spencer recounted the story in his memoir, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.” The book includes anecdotes Princess Diana allegedly shared with her brother while she was dating the then-Prince Charles.
One story focused on Charles’ ears and the teasing he reportedly endured at school. Spencer claimed that Queen Elizabeth considered having them surgically “pinned back,” but Prince Philip allegedly prevented the proposed procedure from going any further.
Spencer also wrote that Philip had one of the Queen’s corgis’ ears operated on. He presented the alleged incident as a way of illustrating how Philip viewed the original idea as “ridiculous.”
However, Spencer made it clear that he could not verify whether the story was true. “I have no idea if these disturbing tales were true,” he wrote. Still, he added, “Diana believed them.” According to the memoir, the stories left Princess Diana feeling “desperately sad for” King Charles while also making her “fiercely protective” of him.
Spencer noted that this reaction came despite Charles being “a dozen years her senior.” As such, the account of the alleged ear surgery is based on Diana’s reported belief rather than independent confirmation that the procedure was ever considered.
Meanwhile, Spencer said the stories helped convince him that his sister genuinely loved Charles before their engagement. He wrote that Diana displayed “deep and sincere affection for her man,” describing her feelings as “not only true love but almost palpable.”
For context, Diana was 19 when she became engaged to Charles, who was 32 at the time. Later in the memoir, Spencer recalled seeing “a wistful sadness” on his sister’s wedding morning. However, his account of the alleged ear surgery remained explicitly unverified.
