Pizza Hut Outed as 1 of Largest Kale Buyers in US (But It’s Not For Eating)

Two things we never thought would go together are Pizza Hut and kale. But pizza lovers everywhere were shocked to hear this week that the pizza chain was once the biggest buyer of kale in the United States.

This revelation came courtesy Iman Jalali, who shared this mind-blowing information on Twitter.

“Up until 2013, Pizza Hut was the largest buyer of kale in the US,” he tweeted.

If you’re racking your brain, trying to remember a time you ever saw anything green (besides peppers) on your pizza, don’t worry. You’re not losing your mind. Pizza Hut didn’t include the kale on their pies; rather, the chain used it to decorate their salad bars. (Remember those? They’re a pre-pandemic phenomena.)

“It was actually used to cover up the ice that was used on the salad bar to keep everything cold,” a spokesperson from The Hut told Today. “It was a common practice back then.”

In 2012 alone, Pizza Hut hauled almost 14,000 pounds of kale into its restaurants.

Even more surprising than the fact that Pizza Hut used fresh greens is that they ever served salad in a communal setting. That’s the only way we can explain why such a lame tweet went viral.

After all, who the hell goes to Pizza Hut and then wants to serve themselves a huge salad? Those vegetables are taking up valuable real estate in your stomach that could be occupied by cheese, pepperoni, and sausage! Come on, people!
