1 in 3 Male University Students Would Sexually Assault a Woman “If They Could Get Away With It”

A small study conducted by the University of Dakota has seen 1 in 3 men of “University age” admitting that they would rape a woman “if they could get away with it.”

32% of the men questioned in the study said they would have “intentions to force a woman to sexual intercourse” if “nobody would ever know and there wouldn’t be any consequences.” However, of the same group of men only 13.6% claimed that they had “any intentions to rape a woman,” which indicates that these participants have quite a vague understanding of the definition of rape.

The paper, titled “Denying Rape but Endorsing Forceful Intercourse: Exploring Differences Among Responders,” only saw a small number of men being interviewed, with 86 men being questioned and only 73 of them having their responses deemed reusable. However, the shocking results of the small study will now inevitably lead to a larger study being conducted, with Sarah R Edwards, the lead researcher on the study, saying: “The number one point is there are people that will say they would force a woman to have sex but would deny they would rape a woman.”

With “victim-blaming,” the societal behavior which sees the onus often being put upon the female victim of a sexual attack rather than the attacker, still so prominent in the world we live in despite rape awareness protests and campaigns being more prevalent than ever, it’s shocking to see a study, even one as relatively small as this one, highlighting an issue that we know exists but often choose to ignore: many men still fail to understand, or feign ignorance in regards to what rape actually is.

Here’s a little refresher course for you, then, if you find the whole concept of sexual assault completely baffling:

  • If you try to have sex with her and she rejects you, but you continue anyway, you’re a rapist.
  • If she’s intoxicated and unable to stand on her own two feet and you have sex with her, you’re a rapist.
  • If you force yourself upon her in any way, shape or form, then you’re a rapist.

Maybe that will clear things up for the 32% of dickheads who think this kind of behavior is okay.
