It’s official. Marijuana is the shit.

According to Yahoo! Lifestyle, scientists believe they have found yet another reason marijuana should be legal and prevalent in all 50 states, as this time around, it appears as though weed can curb relapse rates in those people who are suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.

“The results provide proof of principle supporting the potential of CBD in relapse prevention along two dimensions: beneficial actions across several vulnerability states and long-lasting effects with only brief treatment,” the study’s lead author Friedbert Weiss said.

The more you know: Multiple Studies Show Marijuana Is Much Healthier Than Alcohol

Weiss was amongst a group of scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California who subjected a lucky group of rats to “a daily intake of alcohol or cocaine” that eventually resulted in “addictive behavior.” They then treated those addicted rodents with CBD, and all of them experienced less anxiety and “fewer relapses when confronted with situations found to trigger the addictive behavior as they recovered from addiction to either alcohol or cocaine.”

Perhaps the most surprising part of the study came when researchers stopped using the CBD after seven days but watched as the rats continued to show reduced relapse rates for five full months afterward. And for the 46 percent of Americans who “have a friend or family member coping with addiction,” that’s a potentially life-changing discovery.
