First Look: Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth In ‘Gotham’

Following photo previews of Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock and Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Fox is continuing its gradual roll out of the lead characters from “Gotham,” an upcoming Batman prequel TV series.

Today’s photo reveal is Sean Pertwee’s Alfred Pennyworth. Believe it or not, Alfred wasn’t always a part of Batman’s backstory, but he was quickly created by writers Bob Kane and Bill Finger, along with artist Jerry Robinson early in 1943. Alfred is the loyal Wayne family butler who became Bruce Wayne’s guardian after the brutal death of his parents.

There’s rarely been a Batman adaptation without Alfred. In Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Michael Caine portrayed Alfred. Although, Ian Abercrombie was the last actor to play Alfred on television in the live action series, “Birds of Prey.” Jeremy Irons will step into the role in the Batman Vs. Superman movie, but first, Pertwee will get a chance to unveil his take on the character.

According to the early description of “Gotham,” this incarnation of Alfred is “a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London who has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.”

Pertwee has extensive credits in film and TV, including Event Horizon, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday, “The Tudors,” “Law & Order: UK,” “Camelot,” “Elementary” and “The Musketeers.”

“Gotham” will likely debut this fall on Fox.
