What Would Sal Do? Star Dylan Taylor On Playing Jesus

What Would Sal Do? is a modern-day parable of an entitled underachiever who, for the first time in his life, is challenged to be a good person when he discovers he’s the second coming of Christ. The series stars Dylan Taylor (Rogue) as the titular slacker Sal; Jennifer Dale (Street Legal) as his mom, the virgin Maria; Ryan McDonald (2012) as Sal’s best friend; Scott Thompson (The Kids In The Hall) as an ambitious priest; and in a supporting role, Letterkenny’s K. Trevor Wilson. It’s set in modern-day Sudbury.

Here’s what star Dylan Taylor had to say about this role, and another role he recently worked on (which is the complete opposite of his character in What Would Sal Do?).

CraveOnline: Tell us about What Would Sal Do?

Dylan Taylor: It is a half-hour sitcom comedy currently streaming on CraveTV about Sal, who is a young man from Sudbuy. His mother was 30 years old and he was conceived immaculately and is the second coming of Christ.

How did you get involved in this project?

I got involved in a traditional sense where I went to the audition and the casting director had cast me a number of times in other things. I went and did a taping for it and didn’t really know if I was right for the part, but I did my thing, and the creator said that I was the guy from the get-go.

Is this your first streaming series?

Yep – it’s the first time doing content streams, and it’s really cool to have all the episodes out there and have people binge watching the show. In the past on a traditional series, people would come up to me and say, ‘I caught your first episode and will continue watching,’ but it’s hard to keep up with things now. But with this, people will watch four hours of the show, which is neat – people get vested a lot quicker, and it’s great to have real excited feedback. The early response is great. Viewers take a lot of pride and excitement in thinking that they’re the first to discover a show.

Will there be another season of What Would Sal Do?

We’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed. And praying to me, of course (laughs).

Any other projects that you’re working on?

I just finished the CBC show Pure, which just finished airing, and I was one of the leads. It couldn’t be more different character-wise – I played a drug dealing menonite!

And I’m part of another franchise but I can’t really speak about it yet.

What’s something that people would be surprised to know about you?

That I’m an amateur boxer. I’m undeafeated! And I’m a visual artist as well.
