The Paper Season 3 Update Comes as NBC Ramps Up Its Peacock Comedy Push

NBC hopes to expand The Paper‘s audience by using its broadcast and streaming platforms to reach more viewers. The move comes as the Peacock series builds momentum with its second season in September.

The recent development comes as NBCUniversal explores ways to use its broadcast and streaming platforms to reach more viewers. According to Deadline, the network hopes its broadcast and streaming offerings will complement one another and attract more viewers to The Paper. Lisa Katz, NBCUniversal’s president of scripted content, shared a major update about the potential third season.

“Yeah, we have a writers’ room that has been working for Season 3. We thought the second season was great; the audience response and consumer response have been really good, saying (it was) as good as or better than the first season,” Katz said.

NBC hopes its returning comedies will drive more viewers to Peacock

NBC has not officially renewed The Paper for a third season. Although the update from Katz certainly assures there’s a possibility, an official renewal has not yet been announced.

Capitalizing on The Paper’s success, Katz and NBCUniversal are looking to add more comedies to the network.

Katz said, “Our strategy of NBC and Peacock complementing each other, we haven’t had the NBC comedies on yet, so we’re hopeful getting those comedies back on NBC will help the engagement on Peacock and bring more comedy viewers. We are eager to see how The Paper performs once St. Dennis and Reggie come back and when we launch Happy’s Place in Newlyweds.”

The strategy follows the strong performance reported for The Paper. Its second season ranked among Nielsen’s top 10 and became Peacock’s second-highest comedy premiere, behind Ted. NBCUniversal is now looking to build on that response through wider exposure.

The Paper will join NBC’s Monday comedy lineup on November 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET, following St. Denis Medical at 8 p.m. The broadcast run will push The Office spinoff to a wider audience that may not subscribe to Peacock.
