Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson blockbuster has encountered an awards-season setback after a Golden Globes eligibility decision. The biopic featured Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop.
A shocking ruling has hampered Michael’s chances at the Golden Globes, as it won’t be eligible to compete in the musical or comedy categories, according to a report by Gold Derby. While the movie features musical performances, they do not really contribute to the plot, according to the Golden Globes rules.
The rule states, “A musical can be a comedy or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot.” It’s been revealed that the biopic’s songs are technically re-creations of Michael Jackson’s biggest hits rather than playing any role in the narrative. Lionsgate can appeal the ruling before October 31, 2026.
How the Golden Globes ruling affects Jaafar Jackson’s co-stars
Despite being denied entry into the musical or comedy nominations, the ruling does not affect Michael’s eligibility in the supporting acting categories. This means Jaafar Jackson’s co-stars, Colman Domingo and Nia Long, can receive nominations for supporting actor and supporting actress, respectively. Michael can also enter the nominations as a drama. However, it will face tough competition in this category from movies such as The Odyssey, La Bola Negra, and others.
Recent musical biopics also competed in the drama category, including Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis, and A Complete Unknown. If the ruling stands, Michael will compete in the drama categories.
Antoine Fuqua directed Michael, and it was originally released in April this year. The movie became the first biopic to reach the $1 billion box-office milestone and grossed $1.02 billion worldwide against a $155 million budget. Its ensemble cast also featured Miles Teller, Mike Myers, and Laura Harrier, among others.
The 84th Golden Globes nominations will be announced on December 7, 2026.
