Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-Winning Movie With Sequel on the Way Lands on Netflix Today

Netflix subscribers can watch one of Joaquin Phoenix’s most celebrated historical epics starting today. Phoenix and Russell Crowe’s period action drama, Gladiator, has been added to the streamer’s catalog, along with its sequel.

The first film tells the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who must rise through the ranks as a gladiator to avenge his family. Gladiator II, set almost two decades after the first film, follows Maximus’ son, Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, facing off against a tyrannical regime.

Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator was released in 2000 to critical acclaim. The film went on to gross over $465 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). At the Academy Awards, Gladiator was nominated across 12 categories, ultimately winning five, including Best Picture. Even after all these years, Gladiator remains one of Scott’s best films.

How Gladiator helped revive the historical epic for a new generation

Gladiator revived the historical epic by presenting a grounded adventure with lavish production design and top-notch performances. The film’s narrative mixed large-scale battles with political intrigue to keep Maximus’ journey thrilling. It also used extensive CGI to recreate Rome of the second century.

Following Gladiator, Hollywood saw a wave of similar historical epics released, including Troy, 300, Alexander, and more. Scott himself directed several similar films, including Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood, The Last Duel, and Gladiator II.

Scott has confirmed he intends to make another sequel, for which Mescal expressed interest in reprising his role. However, Gladiator III has not been officially announced yet.

Besides Crowe and Phoenix, the film stars Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Djimon Hounsou, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi, David Hemmings, and more. Scott directed the film from a script written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson.

Scott will next direct a Treasure Island movie starring Hugh Jackman. The filmmaker most recently directed The Dog Stars.
