Hayley Kiyoko’s acclaimed coming-of-age romantic drama Girls Like Girls is coming to Peacock later this month. The film was released earlier this year to positive reviews and earned over $2.7 million at the domestic box office. Based on Kiyoko’s novel, which itself was an adaptation of her 2015 song, the film tells a queer love story.
Girls Like Girls will start to stream on Peacock from August 14, 2026. Set in 2006, the film follows Coley, a 17-year-old girl who starts to develop romantic feelings for her friend Sonya over the course of a summer. Along the way, Coley also deals with her mother’s passing and its effects on her father, which strains their relationship. Like the music video, the film also explores the anxiety of teenage romance and the vulnerability of coming out.
Why Girls Like Girls continues to resonate with audiences?
Following its release, the film won over critics, earning an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 59 reviews. Critics praised the film’s exploration of touchy subjects with care, providing a bittersweet romance that is proudly queer. Kiyoko’s novel also reached the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. It was awarded a Goldie Award for Young Adult Fiction by the Golden Crown Literary Society.
Distributed by Focus Features, Girls Like Girls received a limited theatrical release, opening to just over 500 screens in the United States. Its streaming release should help it reach a wider audience.
Girls Like Girls stars Maya da Costa, Myra Molloy, Levon Hawke, and Zach Braff. Kiyoko helmed the film as her feature film directorial debut, from a screenplay co-written by her and Stefanie Scott. The 95-minute romance is produced by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, Richard Alan Reid, Katie McNicol, and Dee Best.
