How Nancy Meyers’ The Holiday became a beloved Christmas classic
The Holiday follows two women, Amanda and Iris, played by Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, respectively. They decide to exchange homes over the Christmas holidays to escape their romantic troubles.
The official synopsis further reads, “Each woman finds romance with a local man but realizes that the imminent return home may end the relationship.” Jude Law and Jack Black played the characters of Graham and Miles, respectively. The ensemble cast of the romantic comedy also featured Eli Wallach, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell.
Following its initial debut in theaters, The Holiday didn’t fare very well with critics. However, it managed to strike a chord with the audience. Its popularity among audiences is reflected in its 80% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
As a result, the movie became a huge box office hit for acclaimed filmmaker Nancy Meyers. The Holiday made over $204 million worldwide against an $85 million budget. Meyers also served as the writer and producer on the film, alongside Bruce A. Block. Suzanne Farwell was the executive producer.
The rest of the crew on the movie featured cinematographer Dean Cundy, alongside editor Joe Hutshing, costume designer Marlene Stewart, production designer Jon Hutman, art director Dan Webster, and set decorators David Smith and Cindy Carr. Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer composed the film’s score.
The Holiday returns to theaters on December 11, 2026.
