One of Emma Mackey’s earliest standout films is now available for streaming. Fans at home can enjoy the acclaimed movie before her next feature, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, hits the screen.
Emily, the 2022 biographical drama directed by Frances O’Connor, has arrived on Netflix today, October 21. It is a part-fictional portrait of English writer Emily Brontë, portrayed by Mackey. Other cast members include Fionn Whitehead, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Alexandra Dowling, Amelia Gething, and more.
Emily received critical acclaim upon its release, with particular praise for Mackey’s performance. The movie currently holds an 87% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
How Emily reimagines the inspirations behind a literary classic
Emily gives a semi-fictional account of how Emily Brontë was inspired to pen Wuthering Heights, the only novel she ever wrote, which went on to become one of the greatest works in the history of English literature.
It follows Emma Mackey as young Emily, who is struggling to cope with the death of her mother. Amid the bleakness she feels in her everyday life with her sisters Charlotte and Anne, the aspiring author yearns for artistic inspiration and personal freedom, which finally pushes her to create her magnum opus. The movie also centers on a fictional romantic relationship between Emily and William Weightman.
Fans are now looking forward to seeing Emma Mackey as Jadis, the future White Witch and the last Queen of Charn, in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming epic high fantasy film Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The movie is based on C. S. Lewis’ 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew, a part of his The Chronicles of Narnia book series.
In addition to Mackey, it also stars Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, Susan Wokoma, and more.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew arrives in theaters on February 12, 2027.
