Designers Want This to be the Flag of Planet Earth We Place on Mars

A flag for the planet Earth has been proposed as part of a project from Sweden’s Beckmans College of Design, with it intended to replace the national flags that would otherwise be used in space travel.

The flag shows a series of seven interlocking rings, intended to depict “how everything is in our planet [is] linked,” with the blue background symbolizing water and the life it gives the planet.

As space organizations such as NASA aim to eventually colonize Mars, a flag that represents all the people of Earth, not just one region of it, is certainly an interesting idea. However, it’s also something of an optimistic one, given that each country views their experience with space travel as a badge of honor. A flag of planet Earth being placed on Mars by whichever country reaches the planet first would be a wonderful gesture, it’s unlikely that any government would want to extend an olive branch of peace when they could instead win a dick-swinging contest.

However, the concept art conjured up for the project depicts what this idealistic world that shares the same flag would look like, and while the flag itself may look a little too generic to accurately represent our weird, mixed-up world, it’s certainly a nice thought.
