Margot Robbie To Reprise Harley Quinn In Female DC Spin-Off

The director of 2016 DC Comics film Suicide Squad, David Ayer, looks set to team up with Aussie star Margot Robbie on a new film set to feature a slew of female DC villains called Gotham City Sirens.

DC had hoped that Suicide Squad would finally allow the DC Extended Universe to match Marvel’s well-established Cinematic Universe, and despite the fact that the film gained a largely negative reception (26% on Rotten Tomatoes), it was still a box office hit grossing $745 million worldwide.

Robbie’s character, Harley Quinn, has still emerged as a fan favourite, inspiring a resurgence of the character in global cosplay circles, and now Variety reports that Robbie will star in Gotham City Sirens, which takes its name from a comic series that saw Harley Quinn team up with DC characters Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

Robbie is also set to take on a role as executive producer on the film, while the screenplay will be written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who wrote Sherlock Holmes 3 and Tomb Raider.

Filming is reportedly set to begin in the second quarter of 2017, after Robbie finishes her commitments on a film portrayal of disgraced US ice-skating star Tonya Harding called I, Tonya.
