Minecraft is the Third Best-Selling Video Game Ever with 54 Million Sales

There are games that sell millions of copies, and then there are the games that shatter records. Minecraft is one of the latter, a game with strong mainstream appeal that inspires creativity from both young and old. While it’s no surprise that it’s been popular, it is surprising just how popular it has been.

Mojang Data Analyst Patrick Geuder has confirmed that Minecraft is well beyond the 50 million sales mark in his latest Tweet which reads:

Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac. And across all platforms we’ve sold almost 54 million copies.

Currently sitting at third place for best-selling video games of all-time, Minecraft‘s sales are very likely to go up with its pending release on PS4, Xbox One, and PS Vita. However, it’s unlikely to break into the second slot which is inhabited by Wii Sports, an interesting entry that’s gathered over 82 million units sold since 2006 due to its inclusion with the popular Wii console. Tetris still stands strong at 143 million copies, unlikely to be beaten any time soon.

For comparison’s sake, Grand Theft Auto V sits at the sixth spot with 32.5 million units sold— PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions are coming, so this number will rise—, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 accumulated 28.5 million. Hitting the 50 mark, let alone surpassing it, is something truly extraordinary.

Minecraft developer Markus Persson recently canceled the game’s support of Oculus Rift, making it seem that its charming world will never be introduced to virtual reality. However, modders have picked up where he left off developing Minecrift, an already available Oculus mod for the game. With it, Minecraft looks to remain relevant in the years to come despite a Minecraft 2 appearing unlikely.
