“Mario Kart 8 is the Wii U’s Last Chance”, says Retailer

Mario Kart 8 is the Wii U’s last chance to succeed, an online retailer has allegedly told MCV magazine.

The “top” retailer, who remained anonymous, said: “There is only one real last chance for Wii U and it is Mario Kart 8. It could still be the game that sparks interest in Wii U, but it would need to be combined with a more mass market retail price.” Other retailers speaking to the magazine were also in alleged agreement with the Wii U needing a lower price point.

Nintendo recently issued a profit warning, lowering its forecast of global Wii U sales for the year from 9 million units to 2.8 million, a cut of around 70%. We wrote a feature on why we believe Nintendo needn’t worry regardless of the Wii U’s future, which you can read right here.

We should all remember that the 3DS was deemed a failure upon its launch, too, until Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 were released in quick succession, leading to the handheld’s fortunes turning around. Maybe with the one-two punch of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. U this year, the Wii U will experience similar success.
