Ryan Gosling to Play Ken in Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Movie, And This All Sounds About Right

There are certain things we can count on in this life: unrealistic expectations, secret cosmetic surgeries, and good-looking people to be cast as, well, good-looking people—celebrities feeding our already-unrealistic expectations. We’re looking at you Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie

This brings us to writer/director Greta Gerwig’s (Little Women) upcoming Barbie adaptation from Warner Bros. and Mattel Films. Yes, Mattel Films, the film production division of the toy manufacturing company best known for bringing us the most popular fashion dolls in human history. And Hot Wheels…

Now, we’ve dreamt of a Barbie movie, and in our PG-13 dreams (of course) that movie always starred Robbie…and Gosling. Call us Paul Atreides because our dreams will come true when the pair’s Barbie and Ken appear together onscreen in 2023.

This all sounds about right.

Not just because every man with the last name “Gosling” has pretended to be related to Ryan (I actually had a friend who thought this tactic would get him laid—it didn’t.), but because Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach no doubt look to sardonic in their approach to plastic people; evoking the age-old phrase we love to forget, “beauty is only skin/vinyl deep,” while doing Mattel a huge favor and rebooting their brand. Like The Lego Movie before it, this exercise in sanctimony is, at its core, product placement.

If it’s not about sex, it’s all about money.
