Chris Brown’s Congressional Honor Sparks New Clash in Texas

Chris Brown has responded after Texas State Representative Venton Jones apologized for his role in a recent recognition honoring the singer. Brown criticized Jones for changing his position after facing backlash. The singer shared his reaction on Instagram, adding another chapter to the controversy surrounding the recognition.

Texas State Representative Venton Jones appeared with Brown during the singer’s September 12 event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Jones and U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett joined Brown and Usher on stage during the R&B Tour stop. Crockett presented Brown and Usher with a Congressional Record recognition, while Jones presented Brown with a separate state legislative recognition for his contributions to music and entertainment.

Chris Brown initially thanked Jones and Crockett after receiving the recognition. Jones later apologized for his role in honoring Brown following criticism of the appearance. He addressed the backlash during an appearance on “The Don Lemon Show,” apologizing to Black women, women and people who have experienced domestic violence.

Brown then addressed Jones’ apology on Instagram. He said Jones “immediately started tap dancing and apologizing because he didn’t wanna lose voters or support.”

Brown also said he never asked for the recognition. He explained that he was simply “minding my damn business” when the honor came to him. The singer then addressed those involved in the controversy. “I have a great idea.. how about yall leave me the f— alone and let me focus on the fans,” Brown wrote.

Jones’ apology came after he received criticism for appearing with Brown during the recognition ceremony. During his appearance with Don Lemon, Jones said he and Crockett had been brought in to honor Brown and Usher while also helping raise awareness and mobilize voters ahead of the November midterm elections. He said the ceremony had been intended to recognize the artists’ contributions to music and entertainment.

Brown’s response came after Jones publicly addressed the criticism. The exchange has shifted attention from the original recognition to the disagreement over Jones’ subsequent apology.
