Chris Brown has received a suspended sentence in relation to an attack at a London nightclub in 2023. The singer will not serve immediate jail time.
Judge Tony Baumgartner sentenced Brown to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, over the February 2023 attack at Tape London nightclub. Prosecutors described the attack as “vicious and unprovoked,” according to Variety.
“I take account of your employment and long-established career in music,” Baumgartner warned Brown before sentencing. “Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone.”
What happened in the 2023 nightclub attack involving Chris Brown?
Chris Brown pleaded guilty to one count of affray at Southwark Crown Court in July 2026, in connection with the February 2023 attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape London. Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who performs as HoodyBaby, also pleaded guilty.
Brown was accused of hitting Diaw twice on the head with a tequila bottle, while Akinlolu punched him. While the “Under The Influence” singer avoided prison time, Akinlolu received a sentence of four months and suspension for 12 months.
“They continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club,” the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement. “The victim was kicked while he was seated defenseless on the floor.”
Diaw was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head and knees. Police later issued warrants for Brown and Akinlolu after learning that both men had left the U.K. Police arrested Brown on May 15, 2025, after he returned to the U.K. for a concert in Manchester as part of his world tour.
“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South, said at the time.
Brown and Akinlolu had denied more serious charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. Prosecutors later dropped those charges after the pair pleaded guilty to affray.
