Tom Cruise’s Oscar-Nominated Movie Returns to Theaters After Digger’s Lackluster Release

Tom Cruise‘s Oscar-nominated sci-fi thriller movie is coming back to big screens following Digger‘s poor box office performance. Helmed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the dark comedy has become the biggest flop of Cruise’s career.

Regal‘s website lists a screening of Vanilla Sky. The 2001 psychological thriller will be screened between November 15 and November 21, 2026. Directed by Cameron Crowe, the R-rated film stars Cruise alongside Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Kurt Russell.

While it didn’t fare well with critics, Vanilla Sky managed to become a box office hit. It earned over $200 million worldwide against a $70 million budget.

Tom Cruise fans are hoping he gets an Oscar nomination for Digger

Despite Digger’s poor box-office performance, Cruise has been discussed as a possible contender for next year’s Best Actor Oscar nomination. Fans have mostly admired the acclaimed Hollywood star’s performance in the disaster movie.

Some awards predictions have suggested that Cruise could receive a Best Actor nomination for Digger. At the 2026 Academy Awards, Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for Sinners. Jordan played twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the 2025 film. Actors have also won Best Actor for performances involving characters who adopt another identity. Some of them include Jack Lemmon as Jerry and Daphne in 1959’s Some Like It Hot and Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels in 1982’s Tootsie.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Digger is currently playing in theaters. However, its theater count has fallen sharply over the past three weeks. After opening in more than 3,300 North American theaters, the film is now showing in just over 200 theaters. In its first weekend, it made just $8 million domestically against a reported budget of $180 million.

Alongside Cruise, the cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Huller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.
