Chris Brown Dodges Jail After Vicious London Nightclub Attack

Chris Brown will not immediately go to prison over a 2023 London nightclub attack. A British judge handed the singer an eight-month jail sentence but suspended it for 12 months. Brown had previously pleaded guilty to affray. The court heard that he struck music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle during the confrontation.

Judge Tony Baumgartner sentenced Brown at Southwark Crown Court on October 26, according to Variety. The eight-month jail sentence was suspended for one year, meaning Brown avoided immediate imprisonment.

The case dates back to February 2023 at Tape nightclub in London. Prosecutors said Brown struck Diaw with a glass tequila bottle during an altercation that lasted around 20 seconds.

Sky News reported that CCTV shown in court captured Brown hitting Diaw four times, including twice on the head.

Baumgartner described the repeated use of the bottle as “plainly dangerous.” He also said Brown played the “leading role” in the incident.

The judge considered several mitigating factors before suspending the sentence. These included Brown’s guilty plea, stable career, charitable work and the amount of time since his previous convictions involving violence.

Brown’s lawyer said the singer “deeply regretted” the incident and offered a “profound apology.”

The sentencing followed a lengthy legal case. British authorities arrested Brown at a Manchester hotel in May 2025 after he returned to the U.K.

Brown initially denied the charges against him. He later pleaded guilty to affray in July. Prosecutors then dropped other charges, including assault, attempted grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.

Brown later secured release after providing £5 million in security, allowing him to continue touring. His court schedule had also affected his plans when Brown and Usher canceled four October concerts.

Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray. The judge sentenced him to four months in jail, suspended for 12 months.

Brown will avoid serving the eight-month term unless he breaches the conditions of his suspended sentence during the next year.
