A surprising Season 2 twist pitch could change how fans view The Shards‘ biggest mystery. Igby Rigney feels an unexpected character could be behind The Trawler’s crime.

Rigney thinks Rhonda (Ivy Wolk) could secretly be The Trawler and may have faked her kidnapping. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rigney said, “I think Rhonda (Ivy Wolk) being the killer would never be suspected. I think that would be an insane twist, that she had made [her kidnapping] all up and was playing everybody. That would be a pretty crazy way to take it.”
Rigney also favors the idea because Rhonda is not among the people in the interrogation room. He also expressed doubts about the idea that Bret could be The Trawler. The American actor said that is his personal opinion and noted that Ryan Murphy knows the real answer.
Why Igby Rigney thinks fans may be focusing on the wrong suspect
The Shards finale titled Stairway to Heaven ends without revealing The Trawler’s identity. During a Halloween party, an unidentified person sends Terry Schaffer (Wes Bentley) falling from a balcony. Bret (Rigney) enters an interrogation room, where detectives say The Trawler is definitely among the people inside. Bret then accuses Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) of being The Trawler.
The finale makes Robert and the others in the room appear to be the most obvious suspects. The detectives are certain that The Trawler is among them.
Rigney explained, “That’s a big bomb that’s dropped at the end of the season. The detectives are saying specifically, ‘It is somebody in this room. We are 100 percent sure.’ Walking into the room, and it’s everybody. I’m expecting Robert.” He added, “Of course, there’s a ton of confusion because I certainly was not expecting that.”
That clue could send fans toward Robert. However, Rigney’s Rhonda theory points to someone outside the group.
The Shards has not been officially renewed for Season 2.
