True Detective is bringing two acclaimed actors together for its fifth season. Nicolas Cage will lead HBO’s crime anthology series alongside another well-known Hollywood star.
As first reported by Variety in an exclusive and later confirmed by HBO, the new season will introduce a fresh mystery and new characters. Filming is expected to begin in 2027, with Issa López returning to lead the creative team.
Antonio Banderas joins Nicolas Cage in True Detective Season 5
HBO has cast Cage and Antonio Banderas in the lead roles for True Detective Season 5. Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai Garcia. Earlier this month, Cage hinted at his involvement in the series during New York Comic Con, ahead of the official casting announcement.
“My agent’s out there somewhere listening. He’s probably, ‘Don’t say anything there.’ So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?” he said.
Banderas brings decades of celebrated film experience. He received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory. His recent screen credits include Babygirl and Tony, the Anthony Bourdain biopic.
López, who wrote and directed the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, will return for Season 5 as showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer. The upcoming season will be set in New York City’s Jamaica Bay area. While HBO has yet to reveal the full plot, López has hinted that the new story will have some connections to the previous season.
HBO renewed True Detective for a fifth season in February 2024, following the fourth season’s strong ratings and positive critical reception. Since its debut in 2014, the crime anthology has featured different lead casts and mysteries in each season. The upcoming installment will continue that format, with Cage and Banderas leading the latest installment.
