Kaylee Goncalves’ parents, Steve and Kristi, searched desperately for answers in the hours after their daughter and her three friends were found dead inside their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho.
“We didn’t know what to do,” Kristi Goncalves said in Netflix‘s new three-part docuseries, “The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare,” which premiered Wednesday, July 29. “Just shock.” Moreover, Steve recalled that people were turning to them for answers, but clarity only started to form when Kaylee’s ex-boyfriend, Jack, came to their home the day after speaking with police.
“We were looking very forward to seeing somebody who was actually there,” Steve said, describing how the family pressed Jack for anything he knew. According to Kristi, Jack mentioned overhearing Dylan Mortensen, who lived in the home, describe seeing a masked figure dressed in black that night. “I said, ‘an intruder?'” Kristi recalled.
The couple later learned that Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, had been killed in the early hours of Nov. 13, 2022. The Idaho murders shocked the college town and drew national attention.
Bryan Kohberger, a former Ph.D. criminology student, was arrested more than a month later. He pleaded guilty in July 2025 in a deal. Moreover, this spared him the death penalty, and he received four life sentences without parole. He did not provide a motive. This week, however, The New York Times said he has filed a motion to withdraw his guilty plea, citing “ineffective counsel.”
Despite the latest filing, Steve said the move did not surprise him, and he remains confident in the outcome regardless of what a judge decides.
