Bryan Kohberger has criticized his legal team in a handwritten prison letter, claiming that he was pressured into pleading guilty in the Idaho murder case. The letter has ignited debate over the high-profile Idaho murders case and Kohberger’s guilty plea.

Bryan Kohberger, who is currently serving a life sentence in an Idaho prison, claims that his lawyers were ineffective in a handwritten letter, according to TMZ.
He wrote, “I hereby declare that during attorney-client discussion, most of which included all members of Bryan C Kohberger’s immediate family, petitioners were convinced to falsely confess to capital murder. And felony burglary by coercion, disinformation, false promises, and the withholding of exculpatory discovery.
He further added, “Petitioner was convinced that guilt was not an important factor in considering plea acceptance.” Kohberger claimed he entered into the plea unknowingly. He also alleged that his lawyers advised him to enter the plea knowingly and voluntarily.
He added, “a gross misrepresentation of death row in Idaho, including an elaborate, fabricated story.” Kohberger accepted the plea deal shortly before his trial, avoiding the death penalty in exchange for pleading guilty. Now, he has written to withdraw his plea.
An Idaho judge sentenced the former criminology graduate to four consecutive life sentences in July 2025 after he pleaded guilty to murdering four University of Idaho students. The case involves four victims: Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves.
Prosecutors charged Kohberger with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in connection with the fatal stabbings. Kohberger’s legal team was led by Anne Taylor, along with co-counsel Elisa Massoth and expert Bicka Barlow.
The handwritten letter has sparked fresh questions about Kohberger’s guilty plea and his allegations against his legal team. However, there has been no ruling on his request to withdraw his guilty plea.
