WTF. Yep, that’s the only words that come to mind after hearing about this.

As someone who wears contacts, I know how irritated and uncomfortable my eyes feels when the contact I am wearing is pretty worn out and needs to be changed for a new one. So I have no clue how this woman managed to stick 27 contact lenses in her eye. That’s right. 27 contact lenses were discovered by doctors while preparing her for cataract surgery.

Rupal Morjaria, specialist trainee ophthalmologist who dealt with the case at Solihull Hospital in the UK said that “none of us have ever seen this before.” The case occurred last November but it is now being reported in the British Medical Journal.

The lenses, which resembled a ‘blueish mass’ in the 67-year-old patient’s eye, were causing the woman discomfort that she simply attributed to dry eye and old age.

“It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”

Initially, eye specialists discovered 17 lenses, before a further examination revealed that another 10 lenses were stuck in the eye. The patient said she had been wearing monthly disposable contact lenses for 35 years but did not attend regular appointments.

Holy hell.

After this insane discovery, the woman’s cataract surgery was postponed as the “risk of developing endophthalmitis, inflammation of the interior of the eye, was increased.” Oh, and this lady had no idea she had that many lenses in her damn eyeball.

“She was quite shocked, Morjaria said. “When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable.”
