Detox Mondays | St. Patrick’s Day Edition: Matcha Green Tea Shake

Feeling a bit sluggish after one too many pints of green-colored carbs? Yes, the weekend was a blast (from what you remember), the Guinness was frothy and delicious, and you probably did have more Irish car bombs than anyone else in the world, but now it’s Monday and you feel like a leprechaun who’s been run over by a semi and then trampled on by all of Ireland. Lucky for you we have the cure: an energy-boosting, antioxidant-heavy green drink that will perk you up, lift your spirits and give you the push you need to make it to Friday.

The Ingredients

  • 2 tsp Matcha Green Tea Powder
  • 2 tbsp Hot water
  • 1 Handful spinach
  • 1/4 Grapefruit
  • 1/2 Banana
  • 1 cup Almond or Coconut Milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional)
  • 3 ice cubes

The Super Foods

The Logic

Though matcha powder does contain caffeine and gives you a burst of energy similar to a cup of coffee, it also contains high amounts of L-theanine, the amino acid that lowers anxiety and promotes a state of relaxation. This combination gives a unique reaction that’s perfect for a hangover – an energy boost to wake you up combined with a feeling of calm to combat those post-alcohol jitters. Additionally, when you combine matcha with fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, you’re sending your brain the message that it’s time to be active and awake, even if your body is feeling wrecked from too much green beer.
