‘The Walking Dead’ Goes 360 in AMC’s New Video Experience

Despite its TV dominance and its incredibly strong comic book sales, The Walking Dead has yet to give us a truly great video game experience. Sure, the point and click Walking Dead titles by Telltale Games have told some very compelling stories, but it’s not the same thing as getting thrust into the world of Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors. Telltale only unravels a story on rails, rather than letting you go out and really explore the world while evading the walker hordes.

Ahead of the season seven premiere, AMC has debuted a new video by Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero that depicts a walker attack from 360° in each direction. No matter where you look, the zombies are coming for you. And you can’t fight back, nor can you run away. In of itself, that’s a little frustrating. But can you imagine a Walking Dead VR game that looked this good and let you take an active role? Now, that’s something that I’d love to see.

There actually is a VR component to this video, through Google Cardboard. So you can experience it that way if you choose. But I think that AMC is on to something here, and the video game companies should take note. Obviously this was just created as a promotional tool, but AMC is planning to make more 360° Walking Dead videos to run throughout the seventh season. The season premiere is debuting this Sunday, October 23.
