Will ‘The Walking Dead’ Run For 12 Seasons?

During its fifth season of “The Walking Dead” on AMC, the show drew an average of 13.33 million viewers per episode. And when accounting for viewers across all platforms, that number grew to 28 million.

Therefore it’s easy to understand why AMC orders 16 episodes of “The Walking Dead” per season and why a “Walking Dead” spinoff/companion series is coming in 2015. But that might be just the beginning of “The Walking Dead’s” run.

During last weekend’s Producers Guild of America’s Produced By conference (via Indie Wire), “The Walking Dead” executive producer David Alpert said that “I happen to love working from source material, specifically because we have a pretty good idea of what Season 10 is gonna be. We know where season 11 and 12 … we have benchmarks and milestones for those seasons if we’re lucky enough to get there.”

The Walking Dead comic book series created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard has been running since 2003 and it is far ahead of the TV series in terms of potential storylines.

If Alpert’s suggest of ten to twelve seasons of “The Walking Dead’ becomes a reality, it would surpass the American genre series record of ten seasons that is jointly held by “Stargate: SG-1” and “Smallville.”

It’s unlikely that all of the lead cast members of “The Walking Dead” would stick around for ten years or more. But the premise of a zombie apocalypse means that “The Walking Dead” is uniquely suited to get rid of anyone who wants to leave the show.

“The Walking Dead” Season 5 will premiere this October on AMC.
