Jimmy Kimmel recently weighed in on Martha Stewart’s controversial Halloween costume during the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! The late-night host joked about Stewart’s social media post before questioning her explanation that the costume was meant to raise awareness about homelessness. His remarks came after the businesswoman faced widespread criticism online and later issued multiple public apologies over the costume.
What Kimmel said about Stewart’s homelessness-awareness claim
On the November 2 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host addressed Martha Stewart’s recent Halloween costume while discussing celebrity outfits that sparked backlash after the holiday. He then brought up what Stewart chose to wear this year for her costume.
The comedian also joked about the sign Stewart carried, which read, “I Am Hungry. Help Me.” Kimmel then joked that Stewart’s message implying financial hardship was a result of the US economy under Donald Trump.
He then turned his attention to Stewart’s Instagram caption promoting her QVC candle collection. He then jokingly questioned the loyalty of Stewart’s assistant for allowing the post to happen in the first place.
Kimmel also questioned Stewart’s explanation that the costume was intended to raise awareness about homelessness and quipped that Halloween itself should be the only theme of costumes for the holiday.
Stewart’s costume featured torn clothing, makeup resembling dirt, and a sign reading, “I Am Hungry Help Me!!” The look quickly drew criticism across social media after she shared it on Instagram.
Following the backlash, Stewart issued a public statement saying she never intended to offend anyone. She later shared another apology on Instagram, admitting the costume was insensitive and that she had “really screwed up.” Her apology also added that her earlier statement “didn’t go far enough.” She also reiterated her support for organizations that work to address homelessness in the United States.
