Mitch McConnell Issues Trump Warning in Op-Ed After Weeks Out of View

Senator Mitch McConnell broke his weeks-long silence with a pointed message to President Donald Trump, addressing critical concerns over foreign policy and upcoming legislative priorities. The Kentucky Republican penned a Wall Street Journal op-ed challenging Trump’s handling of Russia and Ukraine.

Why the Kentucky Republican criticized Trump’s approach to Putin

Senator Mitch McConnell published a scathing op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on Sunday, criticizing President Donald Trump’s strategy toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican argued that pressuring Ukraine instead of confronting Russia will not achieve peace. He wrote that Trump’s approach “reveals he misunderstands facts that American voters understand well.”

McConnell has long supported Ukraine and opposed Putin. In the op-ed, he described Putin as America’s enemy who is aligned with China, Iran, and North Korea. He also took aim at Trump’s diplomatic envoys without naming Steve Witkoff directly.

The senator urged Trump to seek guidance from the American people rather than relying on business associates. He wrote that the president “should look to the wisdom of the American people, not naive businessmen who seem to think diplomacy entails fawning over adversaries.”

McConnell also warned that passing “a lame-duck legislative agenda” would require cooperation with Republicans who understand geopolitical stakes.

However, the op-ed raised questions about its authorship. McConnell has not appeared publicly since late September and has not given on-camera remarks since his June 14 fall. He returned to the Senate in mid-September in a wheelchair and cast his final vote on September 30.

Throughout his brief return, he avoided reporters’ questions and was closely surrounded by aides, including Chief of Staff Terry Carmack.

Mitch McConnell’s office did not respond to questions about his recovery or recent activities. His communications team includes several senior advisers earning over $210,000 annually. Senior adviser Dylan Vorbach has served as his chief speechwriter.

Despite his absence, some GOP senators have insisted McConnell remains sharp behind closed doors. His ally, Senator Thom Tillis, claimed McConnell quickly raised concerns about Ukraine during a recent conversation.
