President Donald Trump has officially ended his court battle over the $5 million judgment E. Jean Carroll won against him in 2023. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals revealed the development on Tuesday, confirming that he will no longer contest the financial outcome of the sexual abuse and defamation case.
Donald Trump agreed to dismiss his remaining fight over the 2023 $5 million verdict
Trump agreed to drop his remaining appeal regarding the payout to E. Jean Carroll. The court confirmed the decision in a mandate, stating, “The parties stipulate to dismiss this appeal with prejudice … and [Trump] withdraws his motion for a stay pending appeal.” The filing also noted, “The stipulation is SO ORDERED. The stay motion … is deemed WITHDRAWN.” (via The Guardian)
The move changes nothing for Carroll, who already received the funds. Court records show the money, $5.8 million including interest, was released on July 9. After all, Trump’s Second Circuit effort had already become pointless. The Supreme Court declined on June 29 to review his appeal, and Manhattan Federal Court Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered the disbursement on July 8. Trump then asked the Second Circuit for a stay, which the court rejected.
Neama Rahmani, founder of West Coast Trial Lawyers and a former federal prosecutor, described the development as a definitive conclusion to the financial dispute. “It’s a final nail in the coffin. There’s absolutely no way Trump can go after Carroll for this five million plus dollars.” However, Donald Trump still faces a separate legal battle involving an $83 million judgment E. Jean Carroll won in January 2024 for defamation. He has asked the Supreme Court to overturn that verdict.
A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team defended the president, saying, “The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes.” The statement continued, “President Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again.”
