The Mummy 4 brings Rachel Weisz back as Evelyn O’Connell after 25 years
Rachel Weisz is returning as Evelyn O’Connell in The Mummy 4, reuniting with Brendan Fraser after 25 years. Set photos circulating on social media show Weisz in vintage period clothing during active production. The actress last played the role in the 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns.
Weisz did not appear in the 2008 installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Maria Bello replaced her in that film due to reported scheduling conflicts and family commitments. Weisz later denied rumors that she disliked the script, calling those claims false.
The filmmaking duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence, will direct the new film. Their previous credits include the 2019 horror hit Ready or Not. The Mummy 4 will serve as a direct sequel to the 1999 and 2001 films.
The filmmakers plan to ignore the 2008 sequel entirely in this new installment. Production began on September 7 following Fraser’s appearance at France’s Deauville American Film Festival. Fraser told Canal+ at the festival, “I have to be at work on Monday morning.”
Speaking about his return, Fraser expressed confidence in the production team’s professionalism. He described the project’s energy by saying, “It’s like seeing an old friend again.” David Coggeshall wrote the script, while James Vanderbilt and Sean Daniel serve as producers.
Universal Pictures moved the theatrical release date forward to October 15, 2027. The studio originally scheduled the film for May 19, 2028. The movie remains untitled, and plot details stay largely under wraps at this stage.
