Six years after living in the United States, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are back in the UK. Amid their return, reports have emerged that Markle pushed to keep Archie and Lilibet’s royal titles. As the news gains traction, the reason why the Duchess wanted the royal status for her children despite the Sussexes’ 2020 exit has come to light.
Journalist says Meghan Markle reportedly spoke with Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice about her kids’ royal titles
Meghan Markle reportedly insisted that her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, retain their royal titles following discussions with two royals.
According to the Daily Express, though the Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit senior royal roles in 2020, they later stated that there was no intention of stripping their kids of their “birthright.” When announcing Princess Lilibet’s christening in California, the couple also confirmed that they wanted their children to use royal titles.
Reports suggest that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took the call after conversations with his cousins, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Interestingly, the “Suits” alum had told Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that she had no “attachment” to the “grandeur” of royal life. However, a royal commentator has suggested the Sussexes changed their stance and chose to keep their children’s royal status with a distinct motive in mind.
British journalist Neil Sean noted, “Harry and Meghan are very, very keen to cling onto those royal titles. After much deliberation, Meghan decided that the titles would be a good thing, not just for her but for both her children as well. Meghan became very friendly with senior members of the monarchy, predominantly Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice.”
He further explained, “After this, Meghan realised how useful a title can be, particularly when you want to move in the correct circles. That is the reason why they want to clutch hold of titles.”
Under a rule established by King George V in 1917, Archie and Lilibet became entitled to the titles of prince and princess once their grandfather, King Charles, ascended the throne. As grandchildren of the reigning sovereign, Harry and Markle’s children therefore became eligible for the royal titles.
