Is the Air Still Toxic in Silo After Season 3 Ending? Explained

Curious about whether the air outside the silos is actually toxic in Silo Season 3? As the finale reveals Silo 1’s drone capabilities and the truth behind Silo 17’s massacre, the answer becomes far more complicated than expected. Bernard Holland’s death and the survival of thousands outside Silo 17 point toward two very different conclusions.

Here is a breakdown of what the Season 3 finale reveals about the air outside.

Silo Season 3 hints the air may not be toxic anymore

Silo Season 3 presents conflicting evidence about whether the air outside the silos remains toxic. The finale delivers key scenes that support both possibilities simultaneously.

The residents of Silo 17 managed to survive outside their silo for an extended period. Nearly 10,000 people poured out into the open and roamed freely before Troy ordered the massacre. Charlotte’s drone teams then killed them using compound gas and bullets from above. Their survival before the attack suggests the ambient air posed no immediate threat to them.

Lukas Kyle also survived despite his containment suit sustaining a bullet hole from a drone. The puncture exposed him directly to the outside atmosphere for a significant duration. His body showed no signs of poisoning or radiation sickness after the exposure. This detail further supports the theory that the surface air lacks lethal toxins.

However, Bernard Holland’s death complicates this conclusion considerably. He walked outside Silo 18 without a contamination suit and quickly deteriorated. He experienced nosebleeds and visible physical decline before collapsing near the hills. Bernard was already in poor health after his ordeal throughout Season 3. His weakened physical state may have made him vulnerable to conditions others could withstand.

The finale also reveals that Silo 1 operates armed drones carrying 30 liters of compound poison. These drones can spray lethal gas from a distance without being detected by people below. Troy ordered drone surveillance and poison deployment against Silo 17’s residents after they breached the surface. This capability means Silo 1 can selectively poison individuals near any silo door at will.

The show leaves the question deliberately ambiguous heading into Season 4. The Silo 17 survivors and Lukas suggest breathable air exists outside. Bernard’s rapid decline and Silo 1’s drone-deployed poison keep the danger very real for anyone attempting escape.
