NCIS: Origins fans have received a major casting update they have been waiting for. The update confirms the return of a beloved NCIS star for Season 3.
What is the NCIS: Origins casting update?
NCIS started in 2003, with Mark Harmon starring as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The 2024 prequel series, NCIS: Origins, has confirmed a third season, with Harmon reprising his role as Gibbs.
According to Variety, Harmon will return onscreen as part of a “present-day mystery tied to his ‘90s Camp Pendleton days in an action-packed story that unfolds all season long.” This suggests Harmon will appear throughout Season 3 as part of the season-long storyline.
Previously, Harmon made a cameo in the 2024 pilot episode and a special crossover episode between NCIS and NCIS: Origins. He also narrates every episode of the latter show as an older Gibbs. He was a series regular in NCIS for 18 seasons before departing during Season 19. His last full-time appearance came in episode 4.

NCIS: Origins follows a younger Gibbs during the early years of his career. Set in 1991, NCIS: Origins introduces a young Gibbs as he begins his career at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office and learns the ropes from the legend Mike Franks.
The third season is scheduled to premiere in the fall of 2026 and is expected to consist of 10 episodes. While David J. North will return as the showrunner of the series, Gina Lucita Monreal steps down from the role ahead of Season 3.
In Origins, Gibbs is played by Austin Stowell. Other cast members include Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, Diany Rodriguez, and Caleb Foote. Harmon and North also serve as executive producers alongside Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon, Michele Greco, and Eric Christian Olsen.
Apart from the 200e show and its prequel, CBS also airs the spin-off NCIS: Sydney. They are also working on a new spin-off titled NCIS: New York. Other spin-offs in the franchise include NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: Hawai’i, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
