Seth Rogen is planning a return to feature directing. The plan comes more than a decade after his last film, which nearly led to a geopolitical crisis. The actor and filmmaker has spent the past 10 years focusing mainly on acting, writing, and producing.
Seth Rogen may finally direct another movie, here’s when
Rogen revealed his intentions at the premiere of his new comedy, The Invite, on June 24. He admitted that the notorious fallout from his 2014 directorial made him hesitant to return to the role. “It has been a while. The last one we did almost started a war, so that made us maybe a little gun-shy for a little while,” Rogen said (via The Hollywood Reporter).
That film was The Interview, which Seth Rogen co-directed with longtime creative partner Evan Goldberg. The fictional satire featured Rogen and James Franco as journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The premise triggered an international incident, with North Korea threatening the United States and Sony Pictures suffering a cyberattack ahead of the release. Before that, the duo made their directorial debut with the apocalyptic comedy This Is the End in 2013.
While Rogen has stayed away from feature directing since the controversy of 2014, he has rebuilt his confidence through television work. He has helmed episodes of several shows, including his recent hit series The Studio. “We eased back in through television, and it seemed to go well, so we do talk about maybe, hopefully, directing a film next year, actually,” he confirmed. Poking fun at the current state of the industry, he added, “We’re not the biggest problem anymore.”
For now, Rogen is reportedly enjoying a rare break from his usual multi-hyphenate responsibilities. In The Invite, directed by Olivia Wilde, he plays one half of a struggling couple who host a dinner party that quickly spirals out of control. The cast includes Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton as their guests.
