Tim Allen, the voice behind the iconic character Buzz Lightyear in the “Toy Story” franchise, shared the one storyline that creeped him out in the latest instalment. “Toy Story 5”, deemed the most expensive animated movie ever made, hit the theaters on June 19 and enthralled fans worldwide.
Tim Allen reveals the storyline of his ‘Toy Story 5’ character that he found ‘creepy’
At the end of “Toy Story 5”, Buzz Lightyear finally told his real feelings to Jessie. As he stumbles over his words, Jessie decides to let him know her own feelings by planting a kiss on him. The gesture left both Buzz and Tim Allen shocked. In a conversation with Us Weekly, the 73-year-old said, “[It was] creepy!”
He explained that he channelled his inner child while recording as Buzz. “When I’m doing [Toy Story], I’m literally an 8-year-old kid. That’s what the personality I feel is inside Buzz, is my 11-year-old. So it’s like, ‘Oh God, oh no, I’m doing that?!”
Allen, who is the father of two daughters, claimed that the scene felt similar to watching a romantic scene with his own daughters. His younger daughter is 17 and has begun exploring romantic relationships, while his older daughter is 36. However, that does nothing to dissipate the awkwardness every time an intimate scene comes up with his daughters in the same room.
The Golden Glove winner said, “Every time there’s a kissing scene, everybody gets really quiet in the room. Especially when [Elizabeth was] a little younger. And that is exactly how I responded [to Buzz kissing Jessie]. I remember when I first read it, I said, ‘Are you going to show this?’ It’s like Woody’s bald spot. You kind of move them out of the animated thing, and it gets into some larger dramatic questions. Can they get married? And let’s move on from there.”
Despite his initial reservations, Allen recognised that the kiss would draw a range of reactions from audiences, ultimately underscoring the scene’s significance. “I loved [it] because it affects everybody in the room,” he explained. “You know, adults, and then kids go, ‘Eew!’ You got that potpourri of responses.”
