Armie Hammer broke his silence on the scandal that destroyed his career and what it took to claw his way back. The actor opened up about his comeback, his controversial new film, and why he says he “made these problems” for himself.
Armie Hammer’s Citizen Vigilante is practically ‘banned’ in Germany
Armie Hammer wants Hollywood to give him another chance after years away from the spotlight. The actor spoke exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter about rebuilding his career and life after scandal. His new film Citizen Vigilante now faces its own controversy in Germany.
Hammer told THR that receiving the Uwe Boll film offer made him emotional after five years without work. “I’m pretty sure I cried,” he said. “It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything.” He also admitted he would have taken any job to return to acting.
The actor acknowledged his role in his own downfall during the candid interview. “I made these problems for myself,” Hammer said. “This didn’t happen to me by a fluke accident.” He maintained he did not do what accusers claimed but accepted responsibility for his choices.
However, Citizen Vigilante faces a significant obstacle in Germany ahead of its June 19 North American release. Germany’s FSK ratings board refused to grant the film any classification, effectively blocking all distribution in the country. The board determined the film promotes vigilantism, according to director Uwe Boll’s public statement.
Boll based the film on a real Hamburg gang rape case where perpetrators received suspended sentences under juvenile law. He argued the FSK violated Germany’s constitutional protections for artistic freedom under Article 5 of the Basic Law. The director claimed the board aimed to suppress the film’s commentary on crime and migration rather than protect youth.
The film stars Hammer as a wealthy American businessman in Zagreb who becomes a vigilante targeting violent criminals. Costas Mandylor of the Saw franchise co-stars as an Interpol chief pursuing him.
