Meryl Streep opened up about her acting skills during The Devil Wears Prada 2 promotion. In an interview, she admitted being blown away by an actress’s performance.
Meryl Streep praises Laurie Metcalf
In her interview with PEOPLE, Meryl Streep spoke highly of Laurie Metcalf’s acting in Death of a Salesman. “I don’t know how to act,” the Oscar-winning actress said. She continued, “I don’t know how to do it. I don’t know how people do it.” Further, she talked about Metcalf’s performance in the Broadway revival and how she felt like retiring.
“When I see people do it, I think, ‘How did she do that?’ I just saw Death of a Salesman last night [on Broadway]. I mean, I can’t believe Laurie Metcalf just blew my mind… all of them! I thought, ‘Well, I better just retire, because I don’t know how she did that. What an artist.” Streep shared. The 76-year-old continued, “So yeah, I don’t know how to do it. go into everything, not knowing how people do it.”
She further explained, “And you sort of feel and listen and pick it up as you go along. I don’t have a method. But you have a feeling you know what you need to do.” Moreover, Streep recalled staying in character to prepare for the first part of The Devil Wears Prada.
“I was just miserable,” Streep stated. She added, “At first I hung around on-set, and then [in a scene] I’d try to intimidate them. And they didn’t have it, and so I thought, ‘Oh, okay. I’ve got to step back.'”
The Mamma Mia! star continued, “It was really a conscious thing. So I went back to my trailer, and I knitted a lot and seethed. I don’t know if it helped them, but it helped me.” Metcalf also spoke about her role in the Broadway in her recent interview with PEOPLE.
“I didn’t know what to expect of Linda Loman,” she said. The 70-year-old explained, “I had never really, in thinking of the story, thought of her in that way as being the one who starts the ball of doom rolling towards the end.”
