Back to the Future’s Michael J. Fox on Why He Doesn’t Think About Legacy

Michael J. Fox opened up about his perception of his legacy in a recent interview. Alluding to a book written by his father-in-law, he said it emphasizes not waiting for the right time to spend one’s wealth, but doing so while one is still alive. While he understands that one’s foundation remains after a person is gone, Fox said he is currently focused on living life to the fullest and seizing opportunities rather than dwelling on legacy.

Michael J. Fox talks about why he doesn’t spend time thinking about his legacy

Fox spoke about his legacy during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. He said, “I’ll be dead. My late father-in-law wrote a book once called Die Broke. The theory being spend all your money now. I don’t mean just money. Your gift, your nectar. Spend it all now, and spend it on your kids, on people you love. I don’t think about legacy.”

Sharing his stance on one’s foundation, he explained, “Certainly, the foundation will be around, and our work will continue. It’d be nice to have it done before I die, but I don’t know if that will happen. We’re certainly getting closer.”

However, he isn’t focused on his legacy, but rather on living life to the fullest and embracing professional opportunities as they come. He added, “Legacy is other people’s business; my business is to live my best life, do the best I can, the best work I can, seize opportunities like working with Billy and Harrison, and continue to write my story until the pin drops.”

Recently, Fox returned to television, starring in the third season of Shrinking. He plays Jerry, a patient who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. He becomes good friends with Dr. Paul, played by Harrison Ford. For those unfamiliar, Fox had early symptoms of Parkinson’s in 1991, when he was filming Doc Hollywood. He then publicly disclosed his diagnosis in 1998.
