Rob Riggle’s latest movie has received a rare 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The horror-comedy debuted in theaters on October 30, but critics haven’t been impressed by its mix of horror and festive humor.
Christmas at the Kringles has struggled to impress reviewers despite featuring several established comedy actors. Variety’s Todd Gilchrist called it “tired and unfunny,” criticizing its cynical take on the holiday season.
The New York Times’ Glenn Kenny also criticized the movie, calling it a “cinematic stocking stuffer almost no one would actually ask for.” He added that its “ostensibly edgy mayhem” drowns out its comedic moments.
The Los Angeles Times’ Katie Walsh also questioned the decision to lean into horror, writing that the movie elements are “unnecessary, forced and mean-spirited.” She argued that Christmas at the Kringles loses direction as it progresses. It eventually relies on “gore and hacky punchlines” instead of developing its ideas.
Slant Magazine’s Derek Smith similarly criticized the movie’s execution, pointing to its “haphazard plotting, world-building, and character construction.”
These reviews highlight the film’s struggle to balance comedy and horror. While its premise and ensemble cast offered room for an entertaining holiday story, critics felt the execution did not make the most of either genre.
