Liam Neeson‘s latest movie is drawing comparisons to one of the silliest 1970s movies. The Mongoose, an upcoming action thriller written by Thompson Evans and directed by Mark Vanselow, is being compared to decade-old films like Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit.
The movies mentioned above are both comedic road-action films, and reviews describe The Mongoose similarly, noting its unusual mix of high-speed car chases and road-trip chaos.
As Film-Authority.com wrote in part of its review, “If you’re looking for something in the style of Convoy or Smokey and the Bandit, this is your movie. The Mongoose is a satisfying, above-average Liam Neeson action flick that’s for audiences rather than critics, but it ably fulfills the promise of a big action star and a crowd-pleasing story.”
Blu-ray.com‘s review called The Mongoose “an incredibly dopey offering of action cinema, with screenwriter Evans painting conflict with primary colors as the whole endeavor attempts to become a new Smokey and the Bandit for older audiences.”
Peter Sobcynski chimed in with his review on Substack, calling it “a film that seems to have been devised to show what might result if you tried to splice together First Blood and Smokey and the Bandit and if that sounds like a peculiarly unwise mashup in theory, just wait until you see it in practice.”
Here’s what to know about Liam Neeson’s latest action adventure
Liam Neeson’s latest action/crime movie The Mongoose sees him play Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a decorated former Special Forces combat veteran who is falsely accused of murder after a fatal altercation with his ex-wife’s abusive partner.
Fang then flees the scene in a Mustang Shelby Super Snake, triggering a high-speed, cross-country police car chase, helped by members of his former Special Forces Army battalion while a captivated public watches on television and cheers him on.
Neeson joins Marisa Tomei as Tara, Ving Rhames as Tanker, Michael Chiklis as Pope, and Maurice Marvel Meredith as Tilton in the movie.
Audiences can catch The Mongoose in theaters now.
